The resident electoral commissioner in Plateau state,Godwin Kwanga said that armed security officers will not be stationed at polling units while fielding questions at a meeting of security chiefs and community and religious leaders in the state yesterday.he said:
“In line with international best practice, we don’t expect armed security agents at polling units but we expect that there will be armed security men patrolling or stationed at nearby places where they can easily be reached.” source
Also speaking at the meeting, the state Director of Department of Security Services (DSS), Adekunle Ajanaku, said the DSS will ensure that it covers every part of the state during elections and gather evidence at polling units. “Our coverage is going to be evidence based. Everything that happens in the polling units will be captured,” he said.
The communiqué which was signed by security chiefs in the state and read by Ajanaku stated that security operatives will not be manipulated by any political party or aspirant during the general elections “or be seen to favour one aspirant or political party against the others.” In addition, they called on religious and community leaders, women and youths to assist security agencies by providing timely information. Youths at the meeting urged security operatives and INEC officials to be guided by transparency, honesty and fairness.
